A question that always arises in the field of physiotherapy is whether specific training has a better effect on the rehabilitation of certain problems/diagnoses compared to the classical approach.
DNS is one of many concepts in physiotherapy, it stands for Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS).
The research entitled: " Effects of dynamic neuromuscular stabilization training on the core muscle contractility and standing postural control in patients with chronic low back pain: a randomized controlled trial" could give us some answers.
Research conducted by: Huanjie Huang , , Haoyu Xie , Guifang Zhang , Wenwu Xiao , Le Ge , Songbin Chen , Yangkang Zeng , Chuhuai Wang , Hai Li
Methods
60 people with chronic low back pain were admitted and divided into a DNS group and a control group. 30 people in each group. Both groups underwent 12 therapies over 4 weeks (3 per week). Each therapy lasted 50 minutes. Measurements were taken before and after the therapies for both groups.
Muscle thickness measurements were taken and postural control was evaluated in both groups.
Results
Both groups had significant results after 12 treatments. Progress was measured in pain relief and postural control in both groups.
The DNS group had significantly greater improvements in muscle thickness, especially the transversus abdominis muscle, and the diaphragm compared to the control group.
The level of pain reduction was similar in both groups.
In the DNS group, it was found that people improved significantly more in the body coordination test with eyes closed.
Author's opinion
I think that these results are significant for the field of physiotherapy because they show us that there are differences between the conventional approach to rehabilitation and some specific educations.
Part of the education in physiotherapy has scientifically proven effects behind it, I think that DNS is one of those educations, and that young physiotherapists should classify DNS as one of the important and useful educations. More scientific research is needed to thoroughly confirm the effect of DNS.
